Is it possible to eat healthy during a storm, or even during a power outage?
If you prepare ahead of time, it definitely is! Here are some foods that we recommend for you and your family during this Hurricane Irma weekend.- Sweet Potatoes. Many survivalist say that potatoes are one of the best things to have when a storm hits, but sweet potatoes are even better! They are one of the best complex carbohydrates to eat, and give you lots of nutrition. They are delicious with honey and cinnamon, so be sure to get some of that too! If a storm hits and you lose electricity, a sweet potato wrapped in tin foil can be cooked in a fireplace, on an open flame, or even on the engine of your car! So go ahead and stock up on sweet potatoes for your weekend in!
- Avocados. These delicious fruits are packed with omega 3’s and good fats, so be sure to store them up for the rainy weekend. Avocados can be bought when a little green, and saved in a brown paper bag in order to ripen! You can mix up a big batch of guacamole, and eat it with some chips! This is a great way to store good fat when other food is scarce.
- Fruits and Nuts. Out of all the fruits, apples often stay the freshest for longest! Store up on apples, and don’t forget to get your protein through legumes and nuts! Almonds are delicious with apples, and here is a combination that your whole family will love. It even tastes like apple pie!
- 1 apple, chopped
- 1/4 cup almond slivers
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp Honey
But above all, please stay safe throughout this stormy weekend! Enjoy!
