Hurricane Irma Tips! Is it possible to eat healthy during a storm?

5:10 PM

I guess it’s bring your family to work day,

“What good is a big SUV if you can’t load it up with people,”

...says John Hooper. John, CEO of the Health Dare 90-Day Challenge, who drove through the night out of Miami, Florida with 3 adults and 5 children packed in his Escalade to escape Hurricane Irma. His destination: the Health Dare regional staff meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. John is planning to meet with his North and South Carolina office staff to find new, creative ways of taking care of clients, and releasing the new Health Dare client curriculum. John has built a health and wellness dynasty, but it’s no secret his family comes first. “I guess it’s bring your family to work day,” he joked on his Bluetooth while stuck in evacuation traffic. The Health Dare covets your prayers for John and his family, and all of those who are in the path of Hurricane Irma. For those of us expecting to feel the aftermath of this category 5 tropical storm, here are some tips from our Health Dare Coaches!

Is it possible to eat healthy during a storm, or even during a power outage?

If you prepare ahead of time, it definitely is! Here are some foods that we recommend for you and your family during this Hurricane Irma weekend.

  1. Sweet Potatoes. Many survivalist say that potatoes are one of the best things to have when a storm hits, but sweet potatoes are even better! They are one of the best complex carbohydrates to eat, and give you lots of nutrition. They are delicious with honey and cinnamon, so be sure to get some of that too! If a storm hits and you lose electricity, a sweet potato wrapped in tin foil can be cooked in a fireplace, on an open flame, or even on the engine of your car! So go ahead and stock up on sweet potatoes for your weekend in!
  2. Avocados. These delicious fruits are packed with omega 3’s and good fats, so be sure to store them up for the rainy weekend. Avocados can be bought when a little green, and saved in a brown paper bag in order to ripen! You can mix up a big batch of guacamole, and eat it with some chips! This is a great way to store good fat when other food is scarce.
  3. Fruits and Nuts. Out of all the fruits, apples often stay the freshest for longest! Store up on apples, and don’t forget to get your protein through legumes and nuts! Almonds are delicious with apples, and here is a combination that your whole family will love. It even tastes like apple pie!
  • 1 apple, chopped
  • 1/4 cup almond slivers
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp Honey
Mix all together in a bowl, and enjoy! You can also heat it up a bit if you like it warm! Make sure you hit the supermarket and implement these tips for healthy eating from our Health Dare Coaches, and don’t forget to buy your whole wheat bread!

But above all, please stay safe throughout this stormy weekend! Enjoy!
