How to Stay Safe from Wildfire Smoke

(By Executive Health Coach, Bridget Morris)

Wildfires are spreading in North Carolina, and the surrounding cities are becoming heavily affected by the second hand smoke. The human respiratory system is a delicate thing, especially for children, the elderly, and those with various heart and lung diseases, including asthma. It can be difficult to protect your body from something that is in the air itself, but every precaution should be taken to minimize the damage.

• STAY INSIDE. If possible, do not go outside unless absolutely necessary. At the Health Dare, we have taught our clients a special exercise that they can do in their living room. Although exercising outside is extremely good for your body, it is best to stay inside until the smoke in the atmosphere is clear. Get creative! Run in place, play hide and seek with your kids, or do jumping jacks. If you have young children, entertain them by doing a fun craft or baking together. Young children should never be exposed to smoke inhalation, as their young body systems are still developing, and this could cause delayed or damaged growth in the long run. So protect them at all costs.
• WHEN DRIVING, KEEP THE WINDOWS UP. Park your car in the garage if possible, so that your family can get in and out of the car in a closed environment before you turn it on. Keep your air conditioner or heater on a circulation setting so that it will not draw air into your car from outside.
• REFRAIN FROM SMOKING. Smoke and/or second hand smoke is extremely damaging to the human body. Refrain from smoking during a wildfire, or creating any other kind of extra smoke, such as a bonfire. This will simply compound the problem and cause more damage to the atmosphere and to your body. Children should never be exposed to second hand smoke of any kind.
• STAY HYDRATED. One of the best ways to keep your body healthy is to drink water! Smoke inhalation causes dehydration, which can lead to a host of other problems. Stay hydrated by drinking liquids throughout the day, especially water. If you aren’t a fan of water, add lemon, lime, or infused fruit for taste. This is extremely important for your body to function properly, especially during a smoke hazard alert.

When the smoke warning has lifted, be sure to air out your house properly. You may even want to change the vents! Remember, in these situations, it’s always better to be safe than sorry! For more tips or to speak with a Health Dare Coach, go to thehealthdare.com!

The Health Dare Staff Honors Jacob Hall

The Health Dare staff donned super hero outfits today for both themselves and their children in honor of the Jacob Hall’s memorial service. They honored Jacob not only in their Greenville, SC office, but also in their Asheville, Winston-Salem, and Raleigh offices. Honoring the memory of Jacob was a company-wide decision. The CEO of The Health Dare, John Hooper, lives in Miami but still chose to honor Jacob’s memory by dressing his two boys in super hero attire.

John said, “I can’t imagine the pain of losing one of my boys on a normal school day. My heart is with the Hall family and all of Anderson, South Carolina on this memorable day. Any experience is wasted unless we learn from it. Parents need to take a stand and make a difference in their schools, communities and homes, starting with both emotional and physical health for their children.”

Vietnam Veteran Donald Osborne tells his story and loses 8.5 inches in ten days on The Health Dare!

The sweat dripped over one eye as Don looked through the scope of the grenade launcher. As he lay in a ditch near a pool of water, belly down, he wiped the perspiration from his brow. He had been in Vietnam for 61 days, and each day seemed longer than the last. He thought of his wife, back in the states, who was pregnant with their first daughter. A small smile crossed his lips as the feeling of pride swelled in him. Although he was only 20, Donald was proud of his growing family. He was rudely awakened from his thoughts as he heard the shouts of his comrades in the Ninth Infantry Division. It was time to focus. He could hear the thundering propeller of the cobra helicopter approaching. He checked the position of his platoon. Johnson, a private from Illinois, sat alert and focused. Jenkins, a private from Oregon yelled “Look out, it’s comin here on us!” Don could hear the whine of the rockets as they launched from the Cobra. He hugged the ground. Suddenly, everything exploded around him. Don felt his body launch through the air and then everything went silent as he landed deep in the water. He floated, feeling no pain. As he slowly rose to the surface, he felt peaceful. As he broke the surface of the water, he realized that the water around him was crimson red. He couldn’t move. Don cracked open his lips and hoarsely called out “medic.” Then the pain hit. Searing, crushing pain. He felt like he was being pulled apart as his friends, Johnson and Jenkins, grabbed him by the arms and began dragging him toward the Second Platoon, where the exit helicopter awaited. That was the longest 150 yards of his life. Everything was muffled but the pain. He could see Jenkins and Johnson yelling, but they sounded far away. “You’re going to be okay…it’s gonna be okay.” A few hours later, he was lying in a hospital bed after the doctors took 75% of his liver and 4 pieces of shrapnel out of his body. Assuming he was asleep, two doctors talked in hushed tones. Don heard them say, “He could go at any time.” Don's eyes flew open and he said “There ain’t no way I’m dyin Doc.” Doctors pulled a total of 13 pieces of shrapnel out of Don's body. Several pieces are still lodged in his body. Four months, two operations, 45 lbs and seven hospitals later, Don was released. Ten days later he watched as his baby girl entered the world.
